Android 56.7% of Global Tablet Market in Q1: IDC

IDC counts all LCD-based slate devices with screens between seven and 16 inches as tablets

Apple shipped 19.5 million iPads (classic and mini), up 65.3%, and it now has roughly 40% of the tablet business. Its numbers have been trending down and are expected to continue to decline.

Samsung was second up nearly 18% after shipping 8.8 million units.

Asus was third with 2.7 million units (5.5%) and Amazon and its Kindle came in fourth with 1.8 million units (3.7%).

Microsoft is now fifth with 900,000 (3.7%), mostly Windows 8 models. IDC figures Microsoft got off 200,000 ARM-based RT tablets down from about 900,000 shipped in Q4.

Add Samsung, Asus, Amazon and others together because they all run some fashion of Android and that gives Google 28.7 million Android tablets shipped to claim 56.5% of the market, more than Apple's 39.6% for the first time.

IDC counts all LCD-based slate devices with screens between seven and 16 inches as tablets whether or not they have a removable keyboard like Microsoft's Surface models.

IDC figures worldwide tablet shipments more than doubled to 49.2 million in Q1, up 142.4% year-over-year and equaling two tablets for every three PCs.

IDC says growth is at the low end of the market with 80-100 distributing unsung brands, most of which are based on Android. It's not even sure it's found them all.
