VMware is going to spin off most of its non-core assets to parent company EMC where they'll come under the tutelage of former VMware CEO Paul Maritz and former Pivotal Labs CEO Robert Mee according to GigaOm.
The blog, which now expects the move as soon as next week, has been chasing this story since the summer when it thought it was going to happen and got fooled.
The widgetry supposedly going into a new EMC-owned subsidiary include the SpringSource Java framework, the Cloud Foundry Platform-as-a-Service and the GemStone data caching widgetry.

GigaOm says "the move helps separate the money-making, enterprise-focused VMware business from the future CloudFoundry unit that will compete against Amazon and Microsoft Azure."
It will leave VMware with just vSphere, cloud management and virtualization and relieve it of widgetry it's reportedly found hard to monetize.
EMC acquired Pivotal Labs in March for its agile development methodology.
