HP has started rolling out a new series of printers priced from $99 to $300 with a feature that’s never been seen before. They each have their own personal e-mail address.
And provided they’re blessed with their own Internet connection they won’t have to be connected to a PC with the right drivers to print. Instead they’ll be able to print Microsoft Office documents, Adobe PDFs, JPEG image files and other formats from a smartphone, a tablet or a netbook.
These printers will also talk directly to Google’s cloud so people can access Google Docs, Photos and Calendar from the things. See, the widgets have their own touch screen.
HP says the printers can be programmed to print out content on schedule such as news from msnbc.com and Yahoo.
The printer company has started collecting print apps from partners such as Facebook, Crayola, Reuters, DocStoc and Picasa Web Albums as well as msnbc.com and Yahoo.
HP’s printer boss Vyomesh Joshi expects web-empowered, cloud-enabled printing to become the new industry standard. “We know,” he said in a statement, “that our customers want an easy way to print their content, anywhere, anytime. We’re making that a reality today by giving people the power to print from any web-connected device – smartphones, iPads, netbooks and more – to any printer in our portfolio above $99. The world has changed.”
The scheme is Joshi’s retort to the hit HP’s printing gold mine, once the source of most of its profits, took with the recession and to the fear that the world’s newfound mobility would cause its printers’ ink to dry up. The unit currently accounts for about 30% of the company’s profits and around 20% of its revenues.
HP has set up an Apps Store-like ePrintCenter where people can register their products and get updates, configure their devices, track ePrint jobs and browse new print apps.
It said it’s working with a handpicked group of developers to refine its beta SDK and thinks there will be hundreds of print apps by the end of the year. Developers can request the kit from the developers tab of the HP ePrintCenter.
This ePrintCenter is where people will go for Scheduled Delivery of content at a designated time or times each day or week, a feature HP piloted in two major cities.
Ah, but there’s an advertising piper to be paid here.
HP says the Scheduled Delivery service opens up digital print advertising for HP and its content partners. HP and Yahoo plan to launch the service as a pilot program for marketers to populate select print content with customized messages, promotions and information like coupons or local services. Under those circumstances users will apparently get the content for free.
The low-end $99 Photosmart printer is available now. Three others will come out in August and September. Printing photos is a key application and HP’s got its own glossy HP Everyday Photo Paper, which it described as “affordable.”
It’s already got its own free iPrint Photo app for Android smartphones for direct wireless printing to its inkjet printers connected to a local Wi-Fi network. The Android version joins HP iPrint Photo for Symbian, Windows Mobile, iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. A Snapfish by HP mobile app for Android is expected this summer.
Later this year HP expects to add widgetry that prints customized marketing materials such as brochures and flyers; scans Google Docs to the web for printing at a later time; scans, shares, manages and accesses business content online; and supplies business forms such as invoices, contracts, receipts, legal agreements and checklists.
The New York Times says HP expects to sell more than 15 million of its web printers by next year and Joshi told the paper “We think by next year more printing will be done from the web than from word processing applications.”
